Where I Started

I didn't start as an elite runner...

"I was 300lbs and had never run more than a mile in my life..."

I wasn't always a runner.  Rewind eight years and I was 300lbs and had never run more than a mile in my life.  High blood pressure from being very overweight gave me heart problems and I had to go on two medications.  I was barely 30 years old!  I starting dieting and exercising and managed to lose about 80lbs over the next couple years.  It was far from easy, though.  I worked my butt off for every single one of those pounds!  During that period, I also started running.  I could only run 100 yards at first, but I kept trying.

I'm not a natural athelete and was never good at sports.  I eventually ran a marathon but it was painful and I was really, really slow.  I monitored my nutrition and trained incredibly hard and still finished way behind the average runner.  I was pretty sure this was going to be my only marathon but I didn't stop running.  I ran about 20 miles a week for a few years.  Over that time I never got any faster and it certainly didn't get any easier.

My next run was a hilly, 6 mile course with quite a few long staircases along the way.  I'm not going to get into the details but will say that I finished a full 10 minutes earlier than usual.  I've been doing this run once a week for three years and one dose of RunnersXL™ helped me blow out my usual time.
